Roy “Chicky” Arad
Born in 1976 in Beersheba. Editor of the poetry journal Maayan. Arad has published seven books of poems and prose, including the novel The Pelican, and the book of poems The Aircraft Carrier. His poems have been translated into different languages. He co-edited the poetry collections The Red (socialist poetry), Go Out (against Operation Cast Lead), and The Revolution Songbook (following the social protest in the summer of 2011), and the collection of poetry and art Loyalty in Art (published in response to the government’s incitement against artists in Israel). He co-founded (with Mati Shmuelof) the group Guerilla Culture, which combined poetry and social protest. As a musician, he has recorded seven albums and participated in the 2000 Eurovision Song Contest. Arad has also co-curated several social and political exhibitions, including Doron, on art and employment conditions, and Iran, which focused on Israelis’ constant search for a new Hitler. As a journalist in Haaretz supplement, he managed to raise public awareness to fatal accidents of construction works, among other things, thanks to a documentary he directed on this issue.
